OUR PATRON SAINT
Our Church was established in the name of St. ‘Simon’ who is one of the apostles of Christ. He is referred to as the Canaanites [Mathew 10.4, Mark 3.18]
Canaanites here cannot mean an inhibitant of canan, nor can it represent one who dwells at Cana. Rather it should be rentered Cananaean an adherent of the party later known as the Zealots and rentered so by Luke 6:15, Acts 1:13. It’s a matter of dispute weather Simon was zealot the political sense or religious sense of the Jewish community. Actually he might have expected the freedom of the Jewish community from the Romans, and thought that Jesus would become their leader. Any have when he became in Christ he was totally changed and he showed unreserved loyalty, obedience and love lowards his Master. Probably its may be the reason why he is called Simon The Zealot.
It is believed that he had done his missionary work in Egypt and parts of Africa, Syria and Briton. From the “History of Appostles” written by Abdyas says that alongwith Jude he had done his missionary work in Persia and both of them were killed and became Martyers of the Church.
